Villages on Broadway

This is a vision board created for the On Broadway Business Association (OBBA).  My fellow team member from the City of Long Beach Neighborhood Leadership Program c/o 2011 + President of OBBA, Sidney Cramer asked if I could collaborate with him to visually connect the six villages on Broadway business corridor in Long Beach, California.

The board will be presented to the various user groups to start a conversation about their neighborhood and seek design input.  The goal is to unify this particular stretch of Broadway and celebrate its diversity.  Each village is assigned a color which will be used on public infrastructure along the Broadway corridor.  Street lights will be accented with a metal blade sign with the "on Broadway" signature + village name + neighborhood association in that part of the community.

Redlining Los Angeles County

haiku + mural = ❤

For one summer I participated in the Cal Heights Summer Camp. After that I went to Hughes for three years. This neighborhood brings back many happy memories. I tried channeling some of them into this piece.  A huge grid of streets make up the International City . Few are pictured on the mural. What street do you live on? I've lived on Walnut, 3rd, Nieto, Caspian, Daisy, 9th, and Chestnut. My parents are from Japan. I am nisei, aka second generation. In Japanese, musubi = riceball & nagahama = Long Beach This mural is made possible by 7th District Councilmember, Roberto Uranga and California Heights Neighborhood Association .
