The 7th and Maine Beautification Project in the Willmore / City Drake Park Historic District is a community improvement project facilitated by the neighbors of this wonderful community.

The goal of the 7th and Maine Beautification Project is to improve, not only our neighborhood, the Willmore City/Drake Park Historic District, but also to improve everyone’s Downtown Long Beach experience. The Willmore City Heritage Association is spearheading efforts to create a positive departing experience for all of Long Beach, whether residents or visitors, as they leave our City via the 7th Street, 710 freeway on-ramp. This project creates a dramatic, safe, and educational showpiece which will celebrate the multi-cultural, multi-faceted face of our City and its accomplishments, past, present and future.

The term "redlining" was coined in the late 1960s by John McKnight, a  Northwestern University  sociologist and community activist. For one summer I participated in the Cal Heights Summer Camp. After that I went to Hughes for three years. This neighborhood brings back many happy memories. I tried channeling some of them into this piece.  A huge grid of streets make up the International City . Few are pictured on the mural. What street do you live on? I've lived on Walnut, 3rd, Nieto, Caspian, Daisy, 9th, and Chestnut. My parents are from Japan. I am nisei, aka second generation. In Japanese, musubi = riceball & nagahama = Long Beach This mural is made possible by 7th District Councilmember, Roberto Uranga and California Heights Neighborhood Association .
